Call for Papers: Multimodality in Education
Special issue of Punctum. International Journal of Semiotics
Editors: Maria Papadopoulou and Maria Avgerinou

Since the mid ‘90s when Gunther Kress introduced the term Multimodality in the context of the seminal Multiliteracies project, new educational discourses have emerged, evolved and impacted both theory and practice. Multimodality foregrounded the notion that learning is not only a linguistic accomplishment, but linked to the dynamic interrelationship among the different semiotic modes of meaning, such as the linguistic, the visual, the gestural, the spatial or the audio mode, which individuals can draw on to derive and produce meaning.
During the last years, there has been an ongoing interest in applying multimodality in educational practice. Developing multimodally literate students has gradually been introduced in the school curricula in the areas of language, history, arts, maths and sciences education, as it encompasses nearly all subjects and areas. It has been used as a framework for the analysis of textbooks, learning resources, and student’s multimodal productions, as well as for the understanding of classroom interaction and many others. However, as learning occurs not only in educational settings but in many other instances of everyday life, exploring the ways people learn multimodally is not restricted in school classrooms. In formal and informal educational contexts, from pre-primary to tertiary education, the attempts to change the dominant linguistic paradigm and adopt a multimodal perspective produced especially fruitful and even fascinating results.

Second Call for Papers: «Anticipation and Change», the 11th conference of the Nordic Association for Semiotic Studies

Stavanger, Norway, June 13–15th 2019
Venue: Department of social studies, University of Stavanger

The 11th conference of the Nordic Association for Semiotic Studies (NASS XI) will be hosted by University of Stavanger (UiS) and is co-sponsored by Department of social studies (UiS) and «The Greenhouse: An environmental humanities initiative at University of Stavanger»

The overall theme of NASS XI is «Anticipation and change». Relevant topics include – but are not limited to – the semiotics of child development and human development in general, social change, cultural change, environmental change, ontogeny, and evolution. The anticipatory aspect implies that future studies and the power of imagination are also relevant topics, as are, potentially, learning and perception, expectation and prediction, foresight and preconception. We welcome abstract proposals that approach these topics from a semiotic perspective and encourage interdisciplinary relations between semiotics and other disciplines.

14th World Congress of Semiotics, Trajectories

14th World Congress of Semiotics of the International Association of Semiotics Studies /Association Internationale de Sémiotique -IASS/AIS organized by the Asociación Argentina de Semiótica -AAS-and the Universidad Nacional de las Artes -UNA

Buenos Aires, 9-13 september 2019

The word ‘trajectories’ has been chosen for the thematic proposal of this congress, taking on account of the remarkable wealth of meanings arising from its contemporary uses. The best example can be found in the trajectory of definitions of the very notion of semiotics.

Along this semiotic path, there is a manifold of narratives regarding its adoption as the name of a field of analytical research and of publications.

However, the term trajectories, in the plural, also suggests that the semiotic path is neither single nor linear. It does not hide, in short, the diversity of the paths followed to attain the perception of problems that are intrinsically diverse and mobile. Also, the variety of trajectories finds its reason for being in the multiplicity of media, devices and languages that today claim, dispute with each other, and compete for time and space.

CALL FOR PAPERS “ILLUSTRATION AND ADAPTATION” | University of Burgundy, 10 & 11 October 2019

CALL FOR PAPERS “ILLUSTRATION AND ADAPTATION” International conference organised by TIL and ILLUSTR4TIO University of Burgundy, 10 & 11 October 2019

Keynote speakers: Kamilla Elliott (Lancaster University, UK) and Dave McKean (artist, UK)

Illustr4tio’s forthcoming bilingual international conference will deal with the relationship between illustration and adaptation. It aims to allow specialists from different disciplines to compare and exchange on practice, methodology, and theoretical frameworks. Indeed, several fields co-exist without necessarily acknowledging advances in their respective domains. If illustration is a legitimate object of study within intermedial studies (Gabriele Rippl, ed., A Handbook of Intermediality, De Gruyter Mouton, 2015), there are few works that investigate the status of illustration as adaptation, with the exception of works like Kamilla Elliot’s Rethinking the Novel/Film Debate (Cambridge UP, 2003) and Kate Newell’s Expanding Adaptation: From Illustration to Novelization (Palgrave, 2017). More generally, the conceptualisation of illustration introduces questions about the relationship between adaptation and intermediality. It can serve as a starting point for the intersection of the two domains, something Lars Elleström calls for in his essay “Adaptation and Intermediality” (Thomas Leitch, ed., The Oxford Handbook of Adaptation Studies, Oxford UP, 2017).
