Intersemiosis Conference CFP_Extended deadline

EXTENDED DEADLINE
Interdisciplinary Conference Call For Papers “Intersemiotic Translation, Adaptation, Transposition: saying almost the same thing?”
University of Cyprus, Nicosia, November 10-12, 2017
Conference website: www.intersemiosis-cy.com

Conference language: English
Deadline for submission of abstracts: May 20
Notification of acceptance: June 15
Deadline for registration: September 15

The three disciplines of Adaptation Studies, Semiotics, and Translation Studies share a common interest in the transference of texts across modes of signification such as textual, visual, oral, aural, gestural or kinesic. More particularly, Semiotics looks into the interpretation of signs in various semiotic systems, Intersemiotic Translation (Jakobson 1959)1 renders linguistic texts into nonverbal signs, and the study of adaptations can include any generic transposition of a text into other modes of representation. There is an obvious overlap here.

Summer School. Images, Social semiotivs and Multimodality

Summer School-Media Representations Analysis 2: Images, Social Semiotics and Multimodality
07.08.2017-11.08.2017 Maastricht, the Netherlands

Millions of daily posts by social media users, disinformation efforts by governments and the increased visualization in the traditional written press underline the continued importance of visual media analysis. This course teaches you the skills necessary to study how media images can be interpreted, and how their interaction with surrounding textual elements contribute to their meaning potential.

LEXIA 27-28: Intentionality | Call for Papers

Intentionality is one of the most crucial areas of inquiry in both sciences and the humanities. The different disciplines explore it through various approaches. In semiotics, and especially in structural semiotics, intentionality is investigated in relation to the concept of text. If a text is a portion of meaning that a culture isolates as peculiarly significant in relation to its context, the issue of intentionality essentially bears on the origin of textual significance and meaning. We realize that there is meaning in a text. But where is it from? In semiotics, the problem of intentionality comes down to asking meaning the same question that is usually addressed to a stranger: where are you from, meaning? The different disciplines of meaning, as well as the different branches of semiotics, answer this question in discrepant ways.

Tartu Summer School 2017. Extension of deadline

We are happy to announce the call for papers for the next Tartu Summer School of Semiotics taking place August 15-18 2017 in Tartu. The topic of TSSS 2017 is “Generalising Gently”, which addresses the central and problematic nature of generalisations in semiotic and semiosic processes.
Semiotics relies on generalisations both at the level of knowledge production and at the level of its research objects. As a metadiscipline, semiotics provides the tools of translation between different scientific languages, exemplifying the complementarity of different kinds of knowledge in our understanding of reality. Semiotics as a discipline provides specific conceptual generalisations while modelling the semiotic constitution of reality. Besides the production of generalised knowledge, the processes that semiotics studies are themselves built on generalisation, such as perceptual categorisation and schematisation, the formation of behaviour patterns, language based modelling, cultural rituals, and habits. We invite submission of papers to the summer school that discuss the particularities of semiotic knowledge as a form of generalised knowledge as well as papers that focus on the role and functioning of different types of signs, sign systems and languages of culture as means of generalisation.

Extended deadline is March 15, 2017. Applicants will be notified about the acceptance of their abstracts by March 20.

Call for papers: From Theory to Methodology (Special issue of Punctum)

Call for papers: From Theory to Methodology
Special issue of Punctum. International Journal of Semiotics
Editors: Karin Boklund-Lagopoulou and Alexandros Ph. Lagopoulos

A scientific field incorporates four levels of operations, hierarchically related and leading from the more abstract to the more concrete. The first level is that of epistemology, the integration, explicit and conscious or implicit and empirical, of a theory into one of the larger paradigms marking a historical period. On the second level, the theory thus founded on the paradigm defines the key concepts and axes of investigation. From theory follows methodology, the third level, specifying the procedures that allow the researcher to perform concrete operations on the basis of the framework installed by theory. Finally, from methodology follow the techniques that give their final form to the above operations and allow us to arrive at the formulation of concrete results. The value of a theory is demonstrated only by the results obtained by concrete analysis following this process. Debates, of course, are possible on the level of theory and their outcome may be more or less convincing, but this is only intellectually reassuring. The final determination of the value of a theory are its empirical results and their alignment with the available data.

Interdisciplinary Conference Call For Papers “Intersemiotic Translation, Adaptation, Transposition: saying almost the same thing?”

Nevertheless, although in principle at least these three disciplines share common ground, their research seems to focus on different subfields. Most of the work by semioticians focuses on non-linguistic semiotic systems, Translation Studies has traditionally focused on the interlingual transfer of texts, and Adaptation Studies usually deals with cinematic or theatrical versions of literary texts.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Branding and brand–design has achieved a reputation and status of almost mythical proportion over the past few decades. Emerging from its forerunner-corporate identity-to incorporate advertising, consumer lifestyles and attitudes; image-rights; market-research, customisation, global expansion, sound and semiotics, ‘the consumer-as-the-brand’-the word ‘branding’ currently appears bigger than its own umbrella definition. Habitually, in our contemporary societies of mass-consumption branding is associated primarily with marketing and commodities.
